Volunteer: Summer Camp Outdoor CleanupIn the best of times, a summer camp experience is important to a child’s development and experiential learning. During a crisis, summer camp provides kids with stability, structure and joy during the midst of chaotic and stressful times. At four Old Colony Y camps, children participate in socially engaging activities such as swimming, playing sports and games, studying nature and wildlife, and participating in talent shows that will allow kids to enjoy their youth and escape a world crisis that can be terrifying to those whose family lives haven’t been uprooted by COVID-19. Additionally, sending a child to camp has multiplying effects since many parents who are currently unemployed will be looking for jobs and may not be able to interview or go to work if their kid is unable to attend camp. When a child attends camp, parents can take the necessary steps towards self-sufficiency and stability while avoiding the cycle of disadvantage that would be exacerbated if not for the opportunities that the Old Colony YMCA provides. Simply, it is a critical and meaningful undertaking for both children and families. Each year, preparing our camps takes a significant toll on our staff and volunteers. This year will be no different, and the effort required will be compounded by social distancing requirements, staffing changes, and the overall impact of COVID-19. Volunteer groups are welcome at any of our four camps (Stoughton, Plymouth, East Bridgewater, Middleboro) to help clean the camps, perform light landscaping, ensure safety on trails and program areas, and perform some other light maintenance.
